The Christchurch Schools’ Music Festival is establishing a functional relationship with its equivalent festival in Adelaide, “The Festival of Music”.
With its genesis in 1891 as the Thousand Voice Choir, The Festival of Music has been a part of South Australian life and now stands as an official State Icon.
Reaching over 23,000 primary children annually and with singing at its core, the Festival assists schools in reaching out for excellence.
The next Adelaide series will be held between the 13th and 23rd September, 2016 and it will be the 121st series and 125th year since inception. Regional festivals occur at various locations in South Australia from July through to November.
In 2013,the Musical Director of the Christchurch Schools’ Music Festival, Patrick Shepherd, travelled to the Adelaide Festival to commence the relationship. At present, the extent of the sister-festival relationship is unclear but possibilities include sharing of commissioned items, exchange of personnel and even the possibility of sending a choir to the Adelaide Festival.
